ABC holds monthly group parenting classes in the areas listed below. Each class is three hours in length and groups are kept to 12 or less to allow for group discussion and interactive learning. When classes have less than 6 participants, it can be completed in two hours without loss of content.

This class is our most popular and beneficial to parents of children of all ages. It is also a prerequisite for several others as a basis for the development of other knowledge and skills. Positive Parenting offers a firm foundation in understanding the importance of structure and organization in a child’s environment. We define the appropriate developmental expectations for our children and age appropriate responses to behavior. Parents learn to establish positive habits and approach the child in terms of teaching skills rather than only responding to behavior. Behavior management techniques are offered that are non-aggressive, and promote learning self management. Parents explore the different types of parental role and how their family works within that framework, to they may choose which style of behavioral response best meets their child’s needs. Positive Parenting is a pre-requisite for this class. This class will focus on the unique struggles a child encounters when parents are separated, divorced, or just struggling to work together as a team. The focus on this class is to examine the messages children receive and how to improve clarity and consistency in communication patterns and expectations. We discuss the “rules” of co-parenting and how to work with a difficult situation having the child’s best interest in mind. This class helps parents to understand the importance of working together even if there is not agreement on issues. Improving Behavior at Home
Positive Parenting is a pre-requisite for his class. Teaching techniques to address limit setting, behavioral expectations and behavior management issues specific to children’s developmental stage. This class explores the management of the family system and how children are responding. We will teach effective use of behavior charts and allowance. Communication to encourage respect and understanding. Creating a system to deal with problems before they start so parents can behave proactively rather than reactively. The cost is $50. Parenting and D&A Recovery
Recovery effects the entire family. It is vital to the process that parents address their children’s needs as well. This class supports the parent in redefining their parental role in that process. Parents are given strategies to assure their children are getting their emotional needs met and strengthen the familial bond as a new normal is created for all. The cost is $50. Register Online.
One in one hundred fifty (150) children are diagnosed with some form of a developmental disability from PDD, Autism and Aspergers. Parents are the best advocates for the needs of their child in the school system and navigating through the social and communication needs that follow. Understanding the diagnosis and how to choose interventions that increase functioning are key to the success of the child as they navigate through a world that is such a challenge to them. Teens & Tempers
The most challenging developmental stage of all, for both parents and teens are the years where they are searching for their identity and independence. This class is vital for all parents entering the teen years. Helping the parent to balance the opportunity for independence with the need for continued guidance is the focus of this class. Parents are taught communication skills that help the raging tempers associated with adolescence. Recognizing signs of teen depression, peer pressure, social stressors and readiness for the skills needed to enter the world of independence and decision making. Teens are seeking control and independence but continue to need to reverent authority of a parent to help them make good choices. The cost is $50. Register Online.
Dealing With Divorce
Coping with the end of a marriage is often harder on the child then the parents. Kids rarely understand the dynamics and see only the stress and anger. Changing schedules, new patterns of the day and introducing different caregivers and living situations require planning and support. Emotional need of children are often lost during a time parents are hurting as well. This class can help parents remember that while the marriage has ended, the responsibility to our children continues.
